94 Hundred-Milers at 58 Years Old: Karl Meltzer on Finishing What You Started

BY The Spartan Editors

At age 58, legendary ultra-runner Karl Meltzer has completed 94 100-mile races. With six left to go and no slowing down in sight, here’s what Meltzer had to say about pushing through pain, finishing what you start and why YOU can do a 100-mile race, too.

Karl Meltzer wasn't the fastest growing up, but he's always been a mean strategist – something he says is necessary, along with an insatiable hunger for pain and suffering, for anyone who wants to accomplish the feat of finishing a 100-mile race.

In the nineties, Meltzer snagged his first sponsorship deal: About $500 a year to run with Montrail. Since then, he's won more 100 mile races than any other athlete in history and continues to push the envelope when it comes to ultrarunning by doing something most athletes of his caliber would never dream of attempting. At 58 years old, Meltzer has just six 100 mile races left until he has completed one-hundred 100-mile races.
